New District Staff Officer for Incident Management Approved

Starting November 1, 2014, a new District Staff Officer – Incident Management (DSO-IM) position was officially established for each District.

Incident Management is an evolving function in the Coast Guard, and the Auxiliary recognizes the need to keep pace with that expansion. Auxiliary Sector Coordinators have had the task of monitoring and improving Auxiliary performance and readiness in support of Sector needs, but managing critical incidents puts an additional strain on incident staff and responders.

To effectively manage incidents it is critical that prior planning and training take place among responders. To aid in overcoming challenges in these areas, the position of District Staff Officer – Incident Management and Preparedness has been developed and approved and will be effective starting 01 JAN 2015.

  1. I am very interested in Incident Management as described above. I have extensive training as well as on the scene experience with the Coast Guard (volunteer), the Coast Guard Auxiliary (Lake Delton Dam Break & Surge, Wisconsin 2010) and 7 years with American Red Cross as an employee for 37 Major Incident throughout the US.

The Auxiliary is in desperate need of individuals who are willing to plan, coordinate and train their membership Incident Management.

    • Thank you for all your involvement in this important activity. Those members wishing to become more active in Incident Management, or apply for these new positions, please contact your District Chief of Staff through your Chain of Leadership to inform them of your skills, background and interest.

    • At this time there will not be any Incident Manager (IM) Officer appointments at the division or flotilla level. However, ADSO-IMs may be appointed by the Commodore as needed to assist in IM functions.

  2. How are we looking with the strategy for the SO-IM and FSO-IM… I would implore our USCGA to execute those positions as an incident command structure on these levels would help with our alignment and provide better communication to our members. NIMS / ICS must have the same org chart structure as our other positions. ICS is all about structure! Are there any updates on SO / FSO for this position? Thank you.

  3. Members need to be sure that their current address is in AUXDATA and is correct, in order to receive information and mailings. You can provide your local IS Officer with the new address for entry.
